This seminar will explore various ways in which visuals (film, video, still photographs, etc.) augment the anthropological enterprises of research, presenting results of research, and teaching. The emphasis will be on visuals in support of anthropology, not on theories of visuals themselves. Ethnographic film, the most common and best understood such use of visuals in anthropology, is treated in its own course, Mondays at 2:20-5:20. In this connection, attendance at the biannual Taiwan International Ethnographic Film Festival, to be held in Taipei 7-11 October, is also recommended.
We shall study many visuals – especially video – in class. Many relevant readings, published as well as in manuscript, are noted and available, although no one will be expected to read every one.
The seminar is designed to give anthropologists and other social scientists who have some ideas of future research, increased tools and sophistication in the use of visuals.
